Album artwork and artist merch have been the bread and butter of my freelance work since I was a teenager, but as my experience in the world of video grows, I occasionally have the opportunity to accompany artists in a more direct way through music videos.
Art direction and animation for the single "Before You Said Goodbye" from the band Matthäus. Hand-drawn animation is paired with After Effects animation and stylized footage. The songwriter wanted to visually tell a story that fit the mood and lyrics of the song, and I landed on this simple depiction of two people traveling across the world to meet, only to continue on their way after a brief pause. I sketched and storyboarded with the song on repeat and eventually decided to used that "journal" aesthetic in the final video as it seemed like a good fit.
I carried over a similar visual language of paper textures and hand-drawn elements when I was asked to create the physical album. I really connected with the artist's work and it was a joy to design so many aspects of the release.
For "Drain the maker" the debut release of a Chicago-based artist named Uuskhy, I created a music video for Still Waiting, a single off the album. It incorporates found footage from a variety of sources that have been warped and edited to suit the song, and mirror the approach the artist took making the album.
I also created a logo for Uuskhy inspired by classic black metal logos, and designed the tapes that were created for the physical release of "Drain the maker".
